A note from Bill Crawford, CEO
Thank you for your interest in United Bank.
In 1858, twenty businesspeople in Rockville, Connecticut raised $175 to start our bank for the primary purpose of helping their neighbors finance home purchases. While our bank has certainly evolved over time, our core mission of “neighbors helping neighbors” essentially remains the same almost 160 years later.
Today, United Bank has grown to over $7 billion in assets, 54 bank branches in Connecticut and Massachusetts, and more than 785 employees squarely focused on helping individuals, businesses, and nonprofit organizations succeed financially.
After spending many years as a regional executive in a “mega bank,” I joined our company as CEO in 2011. I had observed that there were many very talented bankers and great customers frustrated with the bureaucracy in these large organizations.
The most successful bankers simply want to take care of their customers every step of the way
So my thesis was simple: If we could create a solid banking infrastructure that could support the best and most experienced bankers in our communities, then they would join us and invite their customers to join them.
After converting from a $1.7 billion asset mutual savings bank to a fully public stock bank listed on NASDAQ, we raised $171 million in capital, which allowed us to accelerate growth. And since then we have grown revenue at 20% and earnings per share at 31% at annual compound growth rates each year for the last 6.75 years. We enjoy leading deposit and residential mortgage market share in many of the New England communities that we serve.
In 2017, we were named to Fortune Magazine’s Top 100 Fastest Growing Companies
based on revenue and earnings growth, as well as total shareholder return compared against thousands of domestic and foreign companies traded on U.S. exchanges. Other names on the list include Amazon, Apple, Facebook and several other regional banks across our great nation. About half of our growth has been organic, and the other half through strategic mergers or acquisitions.
Our vision is being realized: we are built to be with you, helping you succeed financially every step of the way. We only succeed when you succeed. Our bank is privileged to work with local independent businesses on Main Street to globally-focused companies exceeding $1 billion in sales … and everyone in between.
We have made significant investments in our technology and project management capabilities, so that we can always provide innovative ways to simplify banking for you. Our conservatively managed bank enjoys strong capital, liquidity, asset quality, and is positioned for stability whatever market or interest rate environment we may face – all benefits to you, the customer.
Life is both exciting and challenging at times. Whether you are buying your first home, saving for a child's education, growing a business, hedging interest rate exposure, leading a government entity, expanding a non-profit or investing for the future, the United Bank team always listens to your carefully and works to understand how we can be helpful; and then we evaluate solutions together focused on meeting or exceeding your goals and objectives.
We will remain by your side to make necessary adjustments together working toward achieving your plans in a responsible manner. Think of us as strategic partners helping you succeed in accomplishing your hopes and dreams. That's what we do every day.
Ultimately, United Bank's real key to success is supporting our bankers in their commitment to providing customers with practical tools, advice, funding, safekeeping of assets, and streamlined processes to help people succeed financially. We are alongside you with the expertise and tools of the large banks, but deliver with the personal and customized service that you would expect from a local community bank.
We look forward to becoming Uniquely United in our shared mission to help achieve what is most important financially in your life right now or at any step along the way.
I want to personally invite you to call, click or come visit us.
